The Writer's Life 4/9 - Accounts

It was time for me to buy minutes for my Tracfone, which I do annually. My info is at the site, so it should have been easy. A message came up that Bank of America had rejected the charge. I immediately suspected the evil forces that have infected my computer. Fearing the start of a credit nightmare, I called the bank’s hotline. I also wondered why, two months from the card’s expiration date, I hadn’t received a new one. Had I become persona non grata? To my surprise and relief, everything was fine. I then tried to register a debit card at Tracfone, but changes were blocked. I called them. Despite the BOA agent’s assurances, the charge was again rejected. I registered my debit card, which I wasn‘t happy about. It was either that or lose my only phone. I was asked a number of security questions. It was a long process but successful. I just visited the site to see which card is registered, and found it was now one from several years ago -- and I was still blocked from making changes. In the age of identity theft, this is most disconcerting. I suspect the errors are Tracfone’s, but how does one really know what's what these days? My credit hasn’t been flagged, but I wonder if tax returns are being filed in my name on information gleaned from my PC by the aforementioned evil forces.

At yesterday's par-three contest at Augusta National, 74-year-old Jack Nicklaus had a hole in one, thrilling the crowd. I hope that's an omen that this year's Masters will be as exciting as it usually is. Can't wait for Sunday's back nine.

Although the weather stinks, I really shouldn't complain. For the third straight day the rain held off and I was able to put some time in at the floating book shop. I had a nice chuckle when I spotted an old timer approaching. I asked why he'd returned from Florida so soon. Turns out his birthday's coming up and his family wanted him here. Surprisingly, he passed on the Russian books I had on display but bit on a James Patterson co-write thriller. My thanks, and to the woman who purchased two romance novels in Russian, and especially to the gentleman who donated about 30 books of excellent variety, from best sellers, to children's books, to those geared toward animal lovers, a Japanese learner, and a beautiful dance instruction pictorial.I had to drag myself away from my nook, as I was starting to shiver from the cold by then. It was the smart move. Fortunately, my car was just across Avenue Z, so it wasn't that hard to get the stuff squared away.
