Here’s someone who makes most men, including me, seem inadequate. In an article in today’s NY Post, Cynthia R. Fagen profiles Staff Sergeant Joe Kapacziewski, who lost a leg due to an injury sustained in combat, and returned to fight after being fitted with a high tech artificial limb below the knee cap. In his gripping new memoir, Back in the Fight (St. Martin’s Press), he describes hunting Taliban targets, leading a squad and even saving a wounded soldier — all without a leg. All told, Kap, as his buddies call him, has served 10 tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and has received three purple hearts, an Army Commendation Medal with a V for valor and a bronze star. Wow! We all owe this remarkable young man a debt of gratitude.
Last night I dreamed I was swimming in lower Sheepshead Bay amongst killer whales, who kept blocking my access to egress. I interpret this as the quandary all who are invested in the stock market currently face. As it continues to make new highs despite a weak economy, would it be wise to begin selling a few assets, that is, getting out? I know precisely what triggered the dream besides anxiety about potential loss should the market collapse. I popped one of the CDs I’ve burned for my car into the player yesterday and Bachelorette by Bjork eventually came up. I love the melody and the vocal. I can never determine if her endearingly offbeat lyrics are deep or simply silly. Anyway, here is part of the chorus: “…If you forget my name, you will go astray/ like a killer whale trapped in a bay….” Fascinating how the mind melds factors in sleep - and all without the help of Spock! Here’s a link to Bjork’s performance of the song on SNL: http://www.spike.com/video-clips/jj2k8q/bachelorette-snl
It was a typically quiet Sunday on Bay Parkway except for a fender bender that had the drivers squabbling over who was at fault. Fortunately, no blows were exchanged and no one got hurt. The police did not show and the two parties eventually drove off, apparently deciding not to report the damages to their respective insurance carriers. One guy supported his front end with about four strips of duct tape. Both of the other car's passenger doors were dented. It seemed like bad timing, a matter of one swerving while the other was pulling out.
My thanks to the five people who bought books and the the survivalist/conspiracy buff, who donated two more useful non-fictions. Happy Easter to Orthodox Christians, and Feliz Cinco de Mayo to those who celebrate that.
