About 20 years ago a co-worker, may he rest in peace, on the commodity trading floor had luck in a ponzi scheme. I don't remember how much money he earned. I doubt it was more than three thousand bucks. He was so blown away that he was certain something bad was going to happen to him to even things out. I understand the feeling. Since last Friday, when Exchanges became available as a Kindle book, things have just fallen into place for me. I've sold one of my books and many others on the street, including two of January Valentine's, my literary angel. I've received donations of more than 50 books. On Wednesday I got a tweet from Ned, who runs the Sheepshead Bay Bites and Bensonhurst Bean web sites, which feature neighborhood news he actually trolls for. He'd set a box of books before his home, which is just around the corner from mine. I plucked about ten marketable ones from the cache. When he set out another the next evening, I passed on it. This morning I swung by on my way to Stop n Shop and, sure enough, there were plenty of choice items still available. I was relieved the day wouldn't be a total loss in terms of my literary efforts. I accompanied a friend to the doctor, which usually turns into a marathon of waiting. Not this time. Even after lunch at a diner and a stop at the bank I was able to open the floating book shop on time. And minutes after I set out the wares, the most favorable parking spot opened up, so I only had to lug the bulging crates a few feet at closing time, ditto for tomorrow. All but two of today's sales were of Russian books, another positive aspect of the week. There's more. I received an email from a female author, Morgen Bailey, who has an amazing online footprint. A month ago I sent her a blurb and pictures of myself and my book covers, hoping she would do a profile of me. It's now live and it is wonderful. I can't thank her enough. And now I wait for the universal scales to balance. What will it be? Car trouble? Someone breaking into my trunk thinking there is something in it other than books, which are of no value to thieves? A cold? Trouble with Verizon now that I've chosen to switch internet service? Failure to master the do it yourself hook up of Cablevision and having to call in a technician, which will cost me money and perhaps a day of selling books? The print version of Exchanges delayed or not coming out at all? Why is it so hard for me to simply accept good fortune? Weird.
