The Writer's Life 9/10 - Potpourri

There were three particularly interesting items in today's NY Post: In 2017 authorities in NYC have so far solved bank robberies at an 86% clip... Here's a guy who did some forward thinking. According to the Weird But True column, a man upset by the booze ban at the Electric Zoo Festival on Randall's Island devised a 100% proof way around it. Three weeks before the event he filled a reusable water bottle with vodka, wrapped it in plastic, and buried it on the grounds. He used GPS to retrieve it... Here's a stunning development: an article reveals that wealthy American families on vacation in Europe are hiring bodyguards. One paid two men $2000 per day, another paid one $7000 for a week. Man, some people have a lot of money.

The NFL season has begun. Is the stunning road win in New England by Kansas City on Thursday night a harbinger of the decline of the Patriots? I doubt it. They will probably not be challenged within their division, which means they will have plenty of time to find their mojo. Miami seems to be on the rise, but I don't see how QB Jay Cutler, who has always seemed to lack confidence despite great skills, will foil Belichick and company. As for the Chiefs, they have to contend with the Raiders and Broncos. Unfairly maligned QB Alex Smith has strong-armed rookie Patrick Mahomes breathing down his neck, with fans dreaming of a similar result as when Tom Brady replaced Drew Bledsoe. Any missteps by either will lead to the dreaded QB controversy. And what can be said for the local squads? It would be surprising if the Giants don't make the playoffs. The Jets seem to have been built to fail this season in order to attain the most beneficial draft position possible. And who will make the Super Bowl? I haven't a clue, although I will be surprised if the Patriots aren't one of the two teams... And in college football, there were two great road wins on Saturday, Oklahoma at Ohio St., and Georgia at Notre Dame. Kudos. Alabama again seems the favorite to be the last team standing.

From Yahoo's Odd News, edited by yours truly: Thousands of nude cyclists set off on a trek around Philadelphia on Saturday for the annual Philly Naked Bike Ride. About 3000 folks in various stages of undress pedaled a 10-mile course taking in sights that included Independence Hall and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where Sylvester Stallone sprinted up the steps in Rocky. Participants can go as bare as they dare. Some were in their birthday suits while others sported underwear or body paint and glitter. Here's a pic:

I took the floating book shop to Park Slope today. The results were modest. My thanks to the young woman who bought Paris: The Novel by Edward Rutherfurd, and to the gentleman who purchased Woodworking for Dummies, and to the other who selected Hiring Contractors Without Going Through Hell: How to Find, Hire, Supervise, and Pay Professional Help by Ellis Levinson, and to the middle aged woman who bought Apprentice in Death by J. D. Robb, who is actually Nora Roberts, who seems to write a book a month.
