The Writer's Life 1/7 - Potpourri

North Korea must be looking for another handout from America. Although it is unlikely that it has developed an H-Bomb, which is more powerful than an A-Bomb, the recent test shows the country is more dangerous than ever, and the world has, in large part, America to thank for that. In an effort to curb the rogue nation's appetite for nukes, our politicians have offered it cash bribes and even provided a couple of reactors through the years, and in each instance NK has ignored the quid pro quo. If the country were to see the invasion of armed forces it deserves, its nuclear capabilities would prove disastrous for its neighbors. It looks like the only solution is to continue to pay the piper.

Here's an eye-opening stat from an article in today's NY Post: rapes by cabbies outnumber those that occur in the subway by a margin of 14-1. Authorities suggest women ride in pairs. There was no breakdown on whether most or all occur in traditional hacks or in the new hailing fleets. Whatever. It sucks and the offenders should be tracked down and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

I'm pissed at NBC, which has scheduled Jlo's new show, Shades of Blue, against one of my favorites, Elementary.

Last night DecadesTV, 112 on Cablevision in NYC, ran a Loretta Young festival. It started with The Stranger (1946), co-starring Orson Welles as a Nazi infiltrator her character marries, and culminated with several episodes of her long-running, eponymous TV series, '53-'61, in which she starred in 163 of them. She did not play a recurring character. It was an anthology. I particularly enjoyed one in which she played a vivacious manicurist hiding from her husband, who had been imprisoned for forgery. Each episode is preceded by her making a grand entrance in a flowing dress, silly by today's standards, to introduce the story. She won three Emmys for it. She was also nominated twice for an Oscar, winning for The Farmer's Daughter (1947).

I haven't looked at my portfolio since some time last week. If the stock market drop is precipitous and the indexes languish in the doldrums for years, I will be kicking myself for not having taken more profits off the table. Let's blame Bush.

It was another pleasant day for outdoor book selling, the nearby flag hanging limp. My thanks to the woman who bought the three Diary of a Wimpy Kid I had on display, and the man who bought a thriller by J.D. Robb/Nora Roberts.
