This is how retired Major Ralph Peters ended his op-ed piece in today's NY Post: "Never before has a US presidential administration combined such naked cowardice, intellectual arrogance and willful blindness. We don’t have a president — we have a scared child covering his eyes at a horror movie. And Putin knows it."
The PC police recently suffered a setback in California. Students at Claremont/Harvey Mudd College organized a mixer for its five affiliated schools. One refused to share in the funding, claiming the title, "Mudd Goes Madd," was offensive to the mentally ill. The party went on without them, a victory for sanity.
In his op-ed piece, also in the Post, Jonathan Podhoretz mentioned a bit of trivia I don't recall having heard. The word "news" came about in the middle ages, condensed from "new things." Who knew?
One of my favorite people is Alexander E. Poet, a frequent visitor to the floating book shop. He and his wife, Nadine, are kind, sweet souls. One of Al's hobbies is photography. He spends a lot of time at the sculpture of the bull in lower Manhattan. He's taken thousands of pictures there and even has had buttons made up of the bull itself. He hoped to sell them but was told by a cop that he couldn't do so. I advised him to do what Occupy Jack does -- bring a can labeled "Donations." He is not comfortable with that, which is too bad. I think he'd make a lot of money. Here's one of his pics:
A stiff wind made conditions at the floating book shop very uncomfortable. Fortunately, the rain held off except for stray drops here and there. My thanks to the tall Russian gentleman who purchased three paperback thrillers, and to Pedro, one of our stellar porters, who saved a bunch of books for me, including children's, of which I was out.
