Selling My Books on the Streets of Brooklyn 9/5 - Wheelin' & Dealin'

Since the demise of crowd picks.com, I needed an outlet for a hobby I’ve enjoyed since 1983, my first year at the Exchange -- trying to pick the winners in all games of the weekly NFL pool. I was pretty good at it, winning at least once or twice a year, and almost always in contention for the top prize for finishing number one in the standings. I even ran the show for a few seasons, which guaranteed I’d end up in the black. I never liked the odds of the bookies' tickets, where one had to pick at least four out of four to win, or the box pool. Two years ago I earned a ten buck gift certificate at crowdpicks. Last year I couldn’t pick my nose, finishing way back in the standings. Yesterday, with the start of the 2014 season just hours away, I ran a search and signed up at: http://www.funofficepools.com/index.php It’s free. It didn’t ask for a credit card number. The only problem so far is that there are no prizes listed. There are tons of ads, so I assume there will be revenue to share. It’s more fun when there is a reward at stake, so I hope the pool will be more than, as we used to say in Brooklyn, for funsies. I’m off to a good start, having been right on last night’s game. I was tempted to take the 5.5 points, given Packers QB Aaron Rodgers’ excellence, but I sense this Seahawks core will be one of the all-time great NFL teams, so I went with the homies. I expect my team, the Giants, to lose big in Detroit. And I’m confident the other local squad, the Jets, will cover at home against a rookie QB. I enjoy the pool more than I do viewing the games. I watched about 20 minutes overall last night. As usual while channel hopping, NBC was either in commercial or just about to go to one.

The gentleman who runs the local Jewish Meals on Wheels stopped his truck, called to me, and reached into the refrigerator for a bag of books, a nice blend of fiction and non. Of course, having been on ice, their covers were damp with condensation that needed to be wiped away. A young man dropped off a similar batch, and the Fed-Ex guy donated another two. I knew Herbie, who loves Hollywood fare, would jump on the Shelley Winters bio. A woman bought Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and 12 books in the children's series The Baby-Sitters Club. Two men bought the last of my DVDs and several works of non-fiction, and several other people purchased a book apiece, including the last in the current batch of Russian. Thanks, folks.
