RIP Art Donovan, 88, All-Pro DT for the Baltimore Colts, who played on their championship teams in ‘58 & ‘59 and is a member of the NFL Hall of Fame. He retired in the early ‘60’s, so I don’t recall having seen him play. He became familiar to me through his appearances on Late Night with David Letterman in the ‘80’s, back in the day when I had the stamina to stay up late week nights. He is an ex-Marine, a veteran of WWII who fought in the Okinawa blood bath. He is living proof that genes have more to do with longevity than proper diet. He was a natural character who had a zest for life, as this clip will demonstrate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMNvBtQw3os
Michael Ansara, 91, also has passed away. His is another of America’s great immigrant stories. Born in a small village in Syria, his family emigrated when he was two. His most famous role was as Cochise in the Broken Arrow TV series of the late ‘50s, which shot 71 episodes. He has 189 titles listed at IMDb. He also did 62 episodes of Rambo and 30 of Law of the Plainsman. Whenever I see him on the screen, my first thought is: Damn, he got to see Barbara Eden naked. She was the second of his three wives. Rest in peace, sir, and thank you.
Here’s more evidence of the world gone mad: A pilot program has begun in NYC where parents can take out low interest loans to finance the cost of day care. To qualify, an applicant must have an income of $80,000 or more. Just what this country needs -- more debt. I guess those involved can always ask for a government bailout if things go south.
I slummed on the golf course today, venturing to Kissena Park, as Forest Park had an outing. I didn't enjoy it, although the weather was spectacular. The tees were all the way up, so the par 64 layout was playing more like a 60. I started flubbing chip shots at the first hole and did it the entire round. That is the one aspect of the game that robs it of fun for me. I shot 86, which looks like a good score. Believe me, it wasn't. Cuz did not hit the ball well at all, but was efficient around the greens and ended with an 84. I'd rather deal with the frustration of trying to sell books.
